How to hang a lightbox, connect it, set the brightness and keep it clean. Keep this page bookmarked — it does not expire.
What comes with your lightbox
- The lightbox in its brushed aluminium frame, with two mounting holes in the back
- Two screws and two wall plugs
- The power cable
- At 60 × 84 cm and 64 × 64 cm: the dimmer fitted inline on the cable, carrying the QR code that opens the app
- At 84 × 120 cm: the dimmer built into the piece, and a remote
You will need a drill, a pencil, a tape measure and a spirit level.
How high to hang it
The rule is the same as for any artwork: the centre of the piece at eye level, around 145–150 cm above the floor. High ceilings do not change it.
- Above a sofa: 20–30 cm between the top of the backrest and the bottom edge.
- Above a sideboard: 25–35 cm of clear wall, measured from the tallest object standing on it.
- Above a bed: 20–25 cm above the headboard.
A lightbox has one consideration the others do not: it is a light source. Think about where the glow lands, not only where the frame sits. Facing a seating area it lights faces; on the wall behind you it lights the room.
On width, a single piece sits well at roughly two thirds the width of the furniture beneath it.
Before you drill
Mark the outline with masking tape and look at it in the evening as well as during the day — the piece changes completely once the room around it gets darker.
Settle the power question at the same time, before the first hole is drilled. If the wall has a lighting outlet — the fixed connection point a ceiling or wall lamp uses — the piece can be wired straight into it and no cable shows. Everywhere else the nearest socket decides more here than you expect.
The 60 × 84 cm format weighs around 8 kg, the 84 × 120 cm around 12 kg. In plasterboard, use cavity anchors rated for that weight rather than the standard plugs.
Hanging it
- Measure the spacing of the two holes in the back of the frame and transfer it to the wall.
- Check the two marks with a spirit level — they must sit at exactly the same height, or the piece hangs crooked.
- Drill both holes with a bit that matches the enclosed wall plugs — same diameter as the plug, never larger — and insert the plugs.
- Drive in the two screws, leaving the heads standing a few millimetres proud of the wall.
- Lift the lightbox and let the two holes drop onto the screw heads. It hangs flush, with no rail and no bracket.
- Connect the piece before you let go of it — into the lighting outlet, or with the cable fed to the socket.
From the larger format upwards, do this with two people. Take the weight from below, not by the frame edge.
Power and brightness
There are two ways to power a lightbox. On a wall with a lighting outlet, it is wired straight in and hangs with no cable in sight. Everywhere else the white cable runs to the nearest socket. Both are within reach if you are comfortable with that kind of work, and for the fixed connection I still recommend a qualified electrician — it is the faster route and, in a rented flat, usually the cleaner one.
Where the dimmer sits depends on the format. At 84 × 120 cm it is built into the piece, and a remote comes with it. The smaller formats — 60 × 84 cm and 64 × 64 cm — carry the dimmer inline on the cable, where you reach it by hand, and the QR code on it opens the app you set the brightness from. That same app connects the piece to a smart home, in every format and entirely optional: it can run on a scene or a schedule, or on nothing at all.
The range is the same either way: from a quiet glow that reads as a painting, up to a real light source that colours the whole room. Turned up, the wall opens like a portal. Turned down, the piece settles into a painting that happens to glow. Most people end up somewhere in the lower half of the range for everyday use.
Where not to hang it
Avoid bathrooms, saunas and anywhere with standing humidity — the piece carries electronics. Otherwise there is no restriction: a lightbox is at its best exactly where the daylight is weakest.
Cleaning
- Switch it off and let it cool before you touch the surface.
- Dust the canvas with a dry microfibre cloth, gently and without pressure. Never wet it.
- Wipe the aluminium frame with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it.
- Never use glass cleaner, alcohol or anything containing ammonia, and never spray liquid onto the piece.
If something goes wrong
If a lightbox arrives damaged, send a photo the same day, before you get rid of the packaging — it will be remade free of charge. If the light behaves oddly, unplug it and get in touch through the contact page rather than opening the frame.
